Chapter 187 – Of Great Importance
When Pei Yan said this, he even cast a sidelong glance at Yu Tang with a faint smile hanging at the corners of his mouth.
Yu Tang was momentarily dumbfounded.
What did Pei Yan mean by this?
Did he think that it would be good to be married to the Gu family? Or was there some other reason for the marriage between the Pei and Gu families that was not disclosed to outsiders?
Yu Tang’s heart sank, feeling that she might have made a mistake coming here.
She knew that Pei Yan was much more formidable than her, so if he felt the need to marry the Gu family, what makes her think that she knows better than Pei Yan and could stop Pei Yan’s decision?
Yu Tang instantly became dejected.
Could it be that it was destined for Gu Xi in this life to marry Pei Yan and become the Pei family’s matriarch?
She mumbled, “Have you already made up your mind, and no matter what I say, you’ll be marrying the Gu family?”
Pei Yan didn’t speak, but circled around Yu Tang.
He saw Yu Tang wilting further, looking more and more like a blanched green vegetable.
He grew a little curious and asked, “Why do you oppose the marriage between the Pei and the Gu family?”
Yu Tang looked up in shock at Pei Yan.
Pei Yan was gazing at her solemnly.
She instantly knew that such an opportunity might only come once, and if she couldn’t seize it, it might not come again.
“I’m at odds with Gu Xi.” She immediately piped up, “And it’s not just an ordinary dislike. This person, she enjoys stepping on me every chance she gets. She’s too pretentious. I don’t want someone like her to become the Pei family’s matriarch. Ladies that marry into the Pei Family should be like Grand Madam, kind, gentle, generous and bold, not only looking out for their own benefit, causing whoever that crosses her to feel uncomfortable in their hearts. I’ve often heard people say that a good wife is worth half a fortune. I, for one, would not want such a person to be your wife ……”
I hope he lives a happy, fulfilling life with a virtuous wife and a filial son.
If it was before she came to see Pei Yan, she could say this without reservations, but after seeing Pei Yan and listening to his words, she abruptly felt that she might be wrong.
Everyone has different feelings and aspirations. What she likes, Pei Yan may not, therefore, she can’t use her own personal feelings to determine Pei Yan’s preferences and whether or not Pei Yan was doing well.
However, Gu Xi is out of the running for sure.
She knew Gu Xi too well.
Yu Tang couldn’t help but blurt out, “All in all, I hope you’ll consider this matter carefully.”
Pei Yan looked at her interestedly, remarking, “Then are you against this because you dislike her? Or are you opposing this because you think she’s not right for me?”
Yu Tang immediately replied, “Both! I think she’s unsuitable and detestable.”
Pei Yan nodded and said, “I see!” He then served the tea with a gesture as if he wanted to send off the guest.
Yu Tang blinked.
Things ended too abruptly.
So did Pei Yan accept her advice or not?
She stood up and said strongly, ”What do you mean? Did you listen to what I said?”
“I’ll think about it.” Pei Yan said with an expressionless face, “If the wife I chose doesn’t fit in with you all, it’ll be a problem.” Saying this, he exuded a look of serious contemplation.
However, in Yu Tang’s eyes, this expression made her feel that he was mocking her.
Yu Tang’s face flushed as she stated “I’ll take my leave then” and rushed out of the pavilion as if she was fleeing.
Pei Yan gazed at her fleeing silhouette and couldn’t help but laugh, his voice gradually rising from a low register and eventually echoing all around the pavilion.
Pei Qi walked out from the forest next to the pavilion, and said in confusion, “Third Master, you, what’s wrong with you?”
Pei Yan restrained his smile, but the depths of his eyes shone as bright and dazzling as a starry river on a summer night, like stars dotting the sky.
“Oh.” He blandly quipped, “A little rabbit ran into the flower garden, made a mess, and then scared itself away.”
A flower garden?
Since when was there a flower garden around here?
Could it be that Third Master was talking about those wildflowers outside the pavilion?
Pei Qi hurriedly replied, “Third master, Ah Ming and the others plucked the wildflowers for almost half a day early in the morning, but there’s too many. In the blink of an eye, they’re back again.”
Pei Yan casually waved his hand and said to Pei Qi, “Lady Yu just left, she shouldn’t have gone too far. Catch up with her and invite Lady Yu to sit in the study for a while, as I have something to speak to her about. I’ll go over after I send off the Yang family.”
What about those wildflowers?
Pei Qi rubbed his head and uttered a sound of assent as he quickly turned around to chase after Yu Tang.
Yu Tang gradually slowed down her pace, but her mind was constantly replaying the conversation with Pei Yan, and the more she thought about it, the angrier she became.
She was obviously here to deter Pei Yan, and yesterday she even contemplated on how best to convey this for half a day, ready to tell Pei Yan some of the things she and Gu Xi did, but why was it that when she met Pei Yan she was just like a child picking a fight, only knowing how to say that she didn’t like Gu Xi, while forgetting the words that she should have otherwise said!
She didn’t blame Pei Yan for not believing her words.
She wouldn’t have believed either.
Alas, she seemed to have messed up even though she had good intentions!
I wonder if there is any way to rectify the situation.
Or perhaps …… she should return and talk to Pei Yan properly?
Pei Yan’s indifferent look surfaced in Yu Tang’s mind.
No.
She stopped in her tracks.
This matter wasn’t her fault. It was Pei Yan who should be blamed.
Every time she conversed with him, Pei Yan was very serious and kept his words brief and more often than not, before she could finish her sentence, he would have already made up his mind, and her words were all immediately stuck in her throat.
This was also the reason why whenever she met Pei Yan, she would always feel defeated, right?
Yu Tang reflected on her behaviour and wondered if she should find another opportunity to talk to Pei Yan about this.
If Gu Xi really became Pei Yan’s wife, she’d have trouble sleeping and eating.
It was much more unbearable than swallowing a fly.
She would rather leave Lin’an.
However, was it appropriate for her to return at this time?
Yu Tang hesitated.
Pei Qi’s voice came from behind her, “Lady Yu, Lady Yu, Third Master requested for you to wait for him in the study, he says he has something more to speak with you about!”
Yu Tang recognised this person.
He was an attendant serving beside Pei Yan.
She couldn’t help but ask, “Why did Third Master change his mind? Did he say what it was that he wanted to speak with me about?”
It wouldn’t be to scold her and tell her to mind her own business, would it?
Yu Tang was a little unnerved.
Pei Qi smiled as he answered, “I don’t know. I’m just following orders.”
Yu Tang mulled it over before going with Pei Qi to Pei Yan’s study.
This study was a five-room open hall with scrolls everywhere. Near the southern window, there was a rocking chair with a plain thin cloth quilt, a ginger-yellow cloth pillow, and a green plum vase with a dried stalk of mugwort in it.
Clearly, this was Pei Yan’s usual study.
It was what he used for his personal reading and writing and not for meeting guests.
Yu Tang was secretly surprised, and even more curious as to why the mugwort was placed in the plum vase, and how this mugwort was preserved even till today.
She was about to walk over and have a look.
Sounds of footsteps were heard from outside the room..
Yu Tang turned and saw a seventeen or eighteen year old lady wearing a green silk robe, dressed like a maid, walking in with a tea tray.
“Lady Yu!” She smilingly curtsied to Yu Tang. She had big, bright eyes, a fair oval face, graceful and polite, just like a well-bred young lady of the inner courtyard, making Yu Tang momentarily unsure of her position.
She introduced herself with a soft smile, “My name is Qing Yuan, I am the eldest maidservant in Third Master’s house. I was uncertain of the type of tea you prefer, so I took the liberty of brewing a crowd’s favourite, West Lake Dragon Well tea. Please try it to see if it’s to your liking. If not, I’ll change it to another tea that suits your preferences.”
Yu Tang wasn’t so particular. She smiled and replied, “I’m not picky about tea, they’re all acceptable. Thank you, Lady Qing Yuan.”
“You are being too polite.” Qing Yuan placed the tea on the coffee table in the study, and two young maids aged fifteen or sixteen years old, brought in refreshments, fruits and nuts.
Yu Tang felt that these two young maids looked somewhat familiar, but couldn’t recall where she had seen them before, so she could only nod towards them.
The two young maids blushed and bowed to her before retreating.
Qing Yuan, meanwhile, accompanied her in the study and chatted with her for a short while, before Pei Yan came over.
“Third Master!” Qing Yuan hurriedly got up and bowed.
Pei Yan, however, did not even spare her a glance as he waved his hand, signalling for her to retreat. He got straight to the point, saying, “Why did you run so fast? I still have things to say.”
Yu Tang stood there, her mouth slightly agape, as she struggled for words to say, feeling that she lacked composure as compared to Qing Yuan, the maid, and behaved just like those two nameless little maids.
The depths of Pei Yan’s eyes glimmered quickly with the slightest twinkle, before returning to the usual austerity, and he said calmly, “I’ve known you for almost two years now, why are you still so flighty, can’t you be more poised?”
Yu Tang’s eyes were twitching at the corners as she listened.
Pei Yan quickly added. “After the 15th day of the first month, the Li family will be moving to Hangzhou City, did you know about this?”
“I know.” Speaking of this, Yu Tang did not care to argue with Pei Yan about his choice of words and said, “I’ve been keeping an eye on their family’s movements. I heard that their family moved to a place not far away from Xiaohe Imperial Street and near to Xiaohe Lane, but I don’t know if it’s true or not.”
Xiaohe Lane was considered as one of the busiest alleys in Hangzhou City, and those who lived there were all either rich or noble, thus very few properties over there were sold to the public.
Yu Tang had not yet inquired if the Li family had rented or bought a house there.
If it was rented, it was fine, but if it was bought, then the Li family might have already started to prepare for a permanent move.
At this point Yu Tang and Pei Yan’s thoughts were the same.
Pei Yan said, “The Li family’s house was purchased.”
Yu Tang frowned and asked, “So, there’s no news from the capital?”
“It would most likely be around the Dragon Boat Festival.” Pei Yan spoke frankly, “I’ve had people send gifts during the New Year’s, and I’ve managed to find out a lot of things from Rizhao. I’m only waiting for the right time.”
This is good.
Yu Tang nodded.
Pei Yan then began to ask her about her New Year’s celebrations, which days did they carry out certain festivities, how the relatives travelled about among the various houses, how many red envelopes did she get, and so on, asking about everything in a haphazard manner.
Yu Tang was getting suspicious of his questions.
Pei Yan did not seem to have any important thing to say, instead, it seems like he was trying to keep her here, not letting her return home.
Yu Tang looked at Pei Yan’s serious-looking face and inwardly doubted her suspicions.
Pei Yan, however, internally stifled his laughter, but it was getting harder and harder the more he held it in, before Pei Man finally came.
He reported to Pei Yan, saying ”Grand Madam said that as the Yang family is the maternal family of Eldest Young Master and since Eldest Madam and the Yang family’s elders all think that this is a good marriage, it would be thus settled. Lady Gu is to be betrothed to Eldest Young Master, and the two families will exchange tokens first, while waiting for Grand Elder’s mourning service period to end before formally arranging the procedures.”
